Fractile raised £540m and nobody announced it
A huge UK AI chip round that showed up in filings instead of a press release

This one's interesting less for the size and more for how it came out. Fractile, a London AI chip startup, raised a £540m Series C (about $721m) and didn't announce it, Sifted found it in the company filings.
Normally a round that big comes with the full announcement, lead investor, valuation and what the money's for. Here we've got none of that yet, so we know the money's there but not who's behind it or what it's priced at.
Chips are a part of the stack European startups rarely get into at this scale, mostly because you need loads of money before you've got anything to sell, designing, testing and making chips is slow and expensive. So someone writing a cheque this size for a UK company rather than leaving it to the big players elsewhere is a really good sign for UK deep tech.
It was a busy week for UK hardware generally too. Machenta, an Imperial robotics spinout, came out of stealth with a $40m seed co-led by Creandum and USV without even having a product yet. So you've got investors backing UK hardware at both ends, really early and really late.
What I'd want to know next is who's in the round, whether it's mostly UK, European or global money, and what the valuation is, that'll say a lot about where Fractile sits against the other AI infrastructure companies. Will update if it comes out !
